Hilliard — Growing up with the influence of her father, an Ohio State football player, and a supportive mother, Hilliard Darby’s Gianna Lane learned early what it takes to succeed. “My dad played football at Ohio State and truly understands what it takes to compete at the next level,” Lane shared. “He’s always there to push me, share advice, and remind me of what’s possible with hard work.”
Lane’s hard work and dedication have led to an exciting next chapter, announcing this week her commitment to continue her track and field career at the University of Dayton, a Division I program in the Atlantic-10 Conference. Reflecting on her decision, Lane shared, “The team environment felt like a family, the campus is beautiful, and the school’s support for student-athletes is top-notch, which made Dayton an easy choice for me.”
Lane has excelled in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as the long jump—events she plans to specialize in at Dayton. “I love the 100 and 200 because they’re all about speed and strategy, and there’s no better feeling than pushing myself to cross the finish line,” Lane explained. “The long jump is exciting because it’s not just about speed but also technique. It’s a challenge to get everything right and fly as far as possible. Each event pushes me to be my best in different ways, and that’s what makes them so rewarding.”
Throughout her career, Lane has consistently made her mark at the conference, district, and regional levels. In the highly competitive Central Ohio landscape, she earned a spot at the 2023 state championships, qualifying in the 100 meters and netting a 12th-place finish.
Lane has set clear goals for her freshman year at Dayton, aiming to place in the A-10 Conference during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. “I want to place in the A-10 Conference during both the indoor and outdoor seasons as a freshman. Academically, my goal is to maintain a strong GPA while balancing the demands of being a student-athlete,” she shared.
For those aspiring to reach the college level, Lane emphasizes the importance of attitude. “Never stop believing in yourself and stay consistent in your work ethic. It’s not just about talent, it’s about how much effort you’re willing to put in. Surround yourself with supportive people, push past your limits, and trust the process,” she advises.
