Worthington — When you watch enough teams over time, you learn that records don’t always tell the full story.
For the Thomas Worthington girls lacrosse team, the margin between a 2-5 start and a winning record is just five goals.
Allyson McCarthy-Minister is back on the Thomas Worthington sideline after a stint at Worthington Kilbourne and a previous successful run leading the Lady Cardinals.
A longtime presence in the Worthington lacrosse community, McCarthy-Minister has seen many of these players develop through the local youth ranks, giving her a familiarity with the roster that goes beyond the stat sheet.
The early results reflect McCarthy-Minister’s philosophy that the best way to grow is by playing tough teams you can schedule.
“We are not in a rough patch, we’ve just played a very challenging schedule,” McCarthy-Minister said. “These girls are really accepting that challenge and have adjusted to the different styles of play that we have been facing.”

With those lessons in hand and improved recent play, the Lady Cardinals carry that experience into OCC action Tuesday against Olentangy.
Like Thomas Worthington, the Lady Braves also carry a misleading record, sitting at 1-4 despite being just two goals away from having a winning record. The matchup presents an early opportunity for both teams to take control of their season.
For the Lady Cardinals, getting wins comes down not only to applying those lessons but also finding consistency across a full game instead of playing in streaks.
“We talk to the girls about playing smarter, not harder,” McCarthy-Minister said. “When we play smarter, we have more composure and chances to create opportunities for one another.”
Thomas Worthington’s roster leans heavily on juniors, with just two seniors and four sophomores.
Those two seniors, Haley Gee (Stony Brook) and Meredith Estepp (Denver), are both committed to continue their lacrosse careers at the collegiate level after this season.

McCarthy-Minister already holds an advantage with her familiarity with Worthington’s youth lacrosse pipeline, and another in a deep junior class she will have two seasons to develop and build around.
Five of those juniors: Macy Morgan, Leo Bower, Lucy Chalfant, Mallory Poland, and CeCe Clay are currently college commits. Even with that talent and future potential, McCarthy-Minister remains focused on the present with her deep junior class.
“I want us to make this season the best that we possibly can,” she said. “Every game and every practice is an opportunity for growth and to learn something. We want to be continuously moving our bar forward.”
With Olentangy on deck and clear growth from the early weeks of the season, McCarthy-Minister believes the Lady Cardinals have all the ingredients to make some noise.
For her, it all comes back to consistency, something that can influence every phase of the game.
“If we play smart together and work as a team, this team has incredible potential,” she said. “As coaches, we are trying to instill that confidence and encouragement to take on these challenges to see how far this program can go.”
