Grove City — Grove City Christian’s start couldn’t have been more disastrous. Hosting rival Fairfield Christian, the Eagles endured a brutal 6:53 stretch where the basket seemed determined to deny them. Shots rimmed out, free throws missed their mark, and frustration mounted. Meanwhile, Fairfield capitalized, surging to a 9-0 lead—only to have the scoring drought catch up with them as well.
Then, just as the game seemed destined for a slow, grinding battle, a spark emerged from the bench. Senior Ryan Laemmle had received a simple, encouraging message from his father before checking in for Grove City Christian. “He said that no one was scoring out here, but you can,” Laemmle recalled. Fueled by those words, he took his shot—and it went in. In that moment, the game’s complexion began to change.
Laemmle broke the ice with a basket—a seemingly simple shot that sent a ripple through the gym. In that instant, the energy in the arena shifted, and Grove City Christian found its spark. What no one realized then was that Laemmle was just getting started. What followed would not only become the best game of his career, but also the feel-good story of the night. “Ryan really propelled us and got us going,” junior Josiah Harmeyer would say postgame, reflecting on the momentum Laemmle ignited for the team.

In the second quarter, Grove City Christian steadily chipped away at the deficit. Bennett Cook, Laemmle, and Jadunn Harris led the charge, bringing the gap down to just a single point. Then, at the 4:52 mark, Laemmle—already the spark that had ignited the offense in the first quarter—delivered once again, sinking the go-ahead basket. Reflecting on his impact, Laemmle humbly acknowledged, “I don’t get the most opportunity, so I’ve never really done something like this here at GCCS. It was my job to put points on the board, so I did it. I just want to help the team where I can.”
It was a fitting moment for the senior, who had shifted the momentum from the moment he checked in. That shot gave him six points, but he was far from finished. Laemmle followed up with a personal 5-0 run, hitting double digits and pushing the Eagles ahead 17-11 over Fairfield. By halftime, Grove City Christian had blown the game open, leading 27-13. The energy had shifted, and it was clear—Fairfield wasn’t going to climb out of that hole.
Any lingering doubt was erased in the opening minutes of the second half. Landon Brunicardi set the tone with a three-pointer right out of the gate, and Josiah Harmeyer followed with back-to-back threes, as part of a personal 8-0 run. The Eagles, despite their shorter bench, never let up. They kept their foot on the gas, turning momentum into dominance until the outcome was undeniable.
If there were ever a ‘Sixth Man of the Game’ award, it would undoubtedly go to Ryan Laemmle, who came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points for the Eagles. In the end, Grove City Christian left no doubt, dominating Fairfield in a commanding 63-36 victory on Saturday night to complete the season sweep of their rival.

Josiah Harmeyer was a monster truck of energy and effort, involved in every play and seemingly everywhere on the court. His relentless drive was a testament to the offseason work the Eagles put in. Harmeyer attributes his stamina to the team’s preseason conditioning. “Every November, Coach Timlin comes in and gets us ready,” Harmeyer explained. “We’re running through the entire practice, and he helps us get in shape for the season.” That preparation paid off, fueling his performance as he powered against Fairfield.
Five different Eagles—Ryan Laemmle, Josiah Harmeyer, Jadunn Harris, Landon Brunicardi, and Bennett Cook—found the scoring column, with Laemmle, Harmeyer, and Harris all reaching double digits. Harmeyer anchored the glass with a team-high seven rebounds, while Cook added six boards, sealing a statement win for the Eagles.
Grove City Christian (9-6, 9-3) still have a chance at a conference title. The Eagles will play division leaders Bishop Rosecrans and Fisher Catholic next week, entering a game back of Fisher Catholic and two games behind Rosecrans. GCCS also sits at #5 in the OHSAA’s Division IV Central District RPI rankings after Saturday’s win.
